Session
Most peering and transport networks are moving from 400G ZR+ to ULH reaches and on to 800G. The whole wavelength is ours — so it's worth asking the optical layer a question we rarely do: is it safe?
The bulk cipher we rely on, AES-256, stays strong even against a quantum computer; the exposed element is the key exchange. And "harvest now, decrypt later" — recording encrypted traffic today to decrypt it once a quantum computer exists — makes that a present-day problem for any data with a long secrecy life.
This talk shows a constructive, non-disruptive fix: quantum key distribution feeds quantum-safe keys into the MACsec or IPsec encryptors you already run, via the standard ETSI GS QKD 014 interface — a boost, not a forklift. We close with the physics of running a quantum channel on live DWDM: Raman coexistence, guard bands, and trusted-node distance limits.
